It was noon on Mars on December 21, 2021. When NASA's "spy" InSight lander on Mars felt a mild earthquake and immediately notified the control room on Earth, as we call it earthquakes on earth such like Marsquake on Mars. We call it a marsquake. Earthquakes have also been noted on Mars and the Moon in the past.
Which is why it wasn't surprising, we thought it would be an earthquake due to geological reasons, but later a satellite orbiting Mars found a 100 meter crater on the Martian surface. From which we realized that what we thought was an earthquake, was actually a shock wave created as a result of a meteor hitting Mars. As a result of this collision, where a crater was formed on one side, on the other side, the ice buried under the Martian surface for millions of years also came out and spread on the Martian surface (which can be seen in the attached image).
This is a huge discovery because it is the first time we have direct evidence of ice beneath the surface of Mars. When humans camp on Mars in the future, this ice will be the most important source of water. The InSight mission is now taking its last breath, it will be retired soon but this mission has helped us a lot in understanding the Martian surface.
